Beyond Survival: Healing, Growth, and the Power of the Human Spirit

This keynote is for:

  • Mental health professionals and organizations looking for an inside perspective on the lived experience of complex PTSD and trauma recovery
  • First responders and military personnel who regularly encounter trauma in their work
  • Healthcare organizations committed to supporting the mental health of their people
  • Workplace health and safety professionals responsible for the wellbeing of the people they serve

Beyond Survival offers a one of a kind opportunity for those who want to understand the mental health implications of extreme trauma and the journey to full recovery from a diagnosis of complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

Amanda Lindhout spent 460 days as a hostage in Somalia. In this keynote, she focuses on the story that followed the captivity, the years of navigating complex PTSD.

Mental health has never been a more urgent conversation. People across every walk of life are struggling in ways that are often invisible to those around them. Amanda Lindhout can speak to that experience from the inside, what it feels like to be disconnected, isolated, and at times unable to engage with the world at all. At her lowest point, she could barely leave her home.

What followed was years of sustained, committed work toward healing. Amanda Lindhout pursued every avenue available to her, conventional and unconventional, driven by hope that better days were ahead. Through that process, she learned that recovery is not a single breakthrough. It is a daily choice to allow difficult feelings to move through rather than suppressing them, and to train her attention, deliberately and consistently, toward what was still good, even when everything felt impossible. She discovered that her resilience grew exponentially through connection with others. In this, she came to understand something universal: we go so much further when we don’t do it alone. Over time, slowly, the weight of the condition began to lift.

Today, Amanda Lindhout is vibrant, healthy, and the mother of a young daughter. She is living proof that profound healing is possible.

What audiences will leave with:

  • An intimate, firsthand account of living with complex PTSD
  • What long-term recovery requires: a daily commitment to healing
  • How to let difficult emotions move through instead of pushing them down, and the habit of turning toward what is still good
  • The Four Quadrants of Resilience: Connection, Gratitude, Presence, and Purpose, as a lived framework for lasting wellbeing
  • A powerful example of recovery, delivering hope that healing from anything is possible
